How free Laptop Deals Work

Free laptop deals are no different to any other kind of incentivised mobile phone deal. The retailer of the phone deal will do one of two things to incentivise the deal.

1) Give Back Some Of Their Profits

On higher end contracts, the retailer may just give an incentive straight out of their own profit. If they know that they will make a certain amont from a given mobile phone contract, they may choose to use some of that profit to offer a free incentive, like a free laptop. They do this to compete with other retailers, the same way one high street shop may offer certain goods at a lower price than another. The isue with mobile phones is that the retailer cannot reduce the monthly bill for you, that is set by the network provider. So, to compete with one another retailers offer incenvies such as free gifts or cash back.

2) Compensate You For Taking a Cheaper Handset

If you are not bothered about the latest all singing all dancing handset, or, you just want a robust functional handset for work you may want a high end contract (in terms of minutes) with a cheaper handset. Again, retailers cannot reduce the monthly cost of the contract. Clearly, you are not going to want to take a cheaper handset with nothing in return, so again, retialers will offer cashback, or free gifts. In this case laptops.

Free Laptop Mobile Deals in a Nutshell

The retailer cannot adjust the monthly cost of your phone bill (set by the network provider. The retailer needs to compete with other retailers. The retailer incentivises their deals to get you to sign up with them, as opposed to a competitor. Alternatively, the retailer uses free gifts to sweeten the deal if you want to take a cheaper mobile phone handset.

Typical Laptops available with Mobile Phones

Below are a selection of laptops which are currently available with mobile phone deals. To find the deals themselves use the navigation in the sidebar, or brand images above to find the brand of laptop you are interested in.

Acer Aspire Laptops

Acer is a leading brand in the laptop industry and its ‘Aspire’ range is becoming increasingly popular amongst consumers. The Aspire series are aesthetically very nice to look at. They come in a range of plain colours with a matte finish, giving it a professional look. However looks aren’t everything, Acer Aspire laptops are up to date with all the latest features such as Wi-Fi and the latest 4GB memory and speedy processors.

One of the most popular in the Acer Aspire range is the Acer Aspire 3935. It ranges in price from £450 to £550 depending on which retailer you use. This laptop has a 4GB memory which makes it perfect for students and people who multitask a lot. The memory size virtually dictates how much you can do on your laptop and how many programmes you can run at the same time. So if you need to be emailing, writing a word document, listening to music and having a sneaky check on Facebook at the same time then this laptop is for you.

Another good feature of the Acer Aspire 3935 is the 250GB hard drive. A must if you want to store all your data on your laptop. All laptop companies suggest these days that you also buy an external hard drive or pen (other wise known as ‘flash’) drive to back up your files. But the 250GB of memory in this laptop is more than enough for all your documents and installed programmes.

All Acer Aspire laptops come with Windows Vista as standard. Vista is the latest user interface from Microsoft and is a sleeker, faster programme to run your laptop with.

Acer Aspire also have a range of netbooks. One of these is the Acer 531 Netbook. The Acer 531 is lightweight at just 1.15 kg and has a screen measuring 10.1 inches. The defining features of netbooks is their long battery life, this one is 7.3 hours. However this does compromise the memory. The Acer 531, like most typical netbooks has a memory of only 1GB which means that multi-tasking is out. The purpose of netbooks however is just to work on the move and to check emails on the move so really if you’re looking for something to email and Facebook and word process and listen to music on, then you’re better off with a normal laptop with better memory.

The Acer 531 Netbook is competitively priced at £349.99 at most retailers, a bit more expensive that most netbook but the powerful Intel Atom N270 processor makes up for that.

Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptops

Toshiba are mostly known for their television production but recently have been producing some good laptops and home personal computers. There are many laptops in the Toshiba Satellite Pro range but to give you an idea of what features they have I’ll talk about the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H.

The Toshiba Satellite A300-27H has 3GB of memory which is on the higher end of memory for laptops these days. 3GB is always given as the minimum memory required for multitasking and swapping between programmes such as work and internet explorer at a fast pace. Some might say that the people at Toshiba should have built in a 4GB memory but for the price tag (recommended retail price is £599 although actual retail price varies between £550 and £650) a 3GB memory is good. Toshiba will allow customers to customise their laptop and one of the options is a bigger memory, although 4GB is the limit as the machine cannot house anymore for it to be compatible.

The hard drive is 250GB, which seems to be the average hard drive size for laptops today, is plenty for everyday laptop use. It’ll store many documents and will definatley house all installed programmes you’ll need. Of course if you’re worried about the size of the hard drive then Toshiba’s customisation option will allow you to increase it up to 300GB. Other document storage options include investing in an external hard drive or flash drive which is also ideal for backing up files.

As with all Toshiba laptops (and most laptops on the market these days) the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H comes with Windows Vista, the latest user interface from Windows.

One big bad point about the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H is that it is not wireless enabled. This is a problem if you want to use your laptop to use the internet on the move. You can of course get internet on the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H but you will need a wireless internet adapter. Most internet providers provide these free or for a small price.

If graphics is your thing then the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H is ideal. The screen is a cut above the rest with a 15.4” diameter and TruBrite screen technology, giving a brighter screen for better visibility when using the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H. The A300-27H comes with a built in DVD player so you can watch movies on the go, better than normal laptops with the TruBrite technology included. The sound quality of the Toshiba Satellite A300-27H is also good with dual speakers.

Asus X58 Laptops

Asus are a new competitor in the laptop market but have proved over the last few years that they make good, solid and reliable machines. The Asus X58 series are simple laptops they don’t have many special features but are good at doing all the simple things you need a laptop to do.

1GB of memory is disappointing for a laptop of the Asus X58’s size (15.4” screen diameter). The 1GB memory capacity would be most suited to netbook, which the Asus X58 is not. It isn’t known if the Asus X58 can be upgraded to have more memory. The 1GB of memory is adequate for simple tasks but if you want to use several programmes at once (e.g. email, word and music at the same time) then you’ll need more memory to do this at speed.

The Asus X58 is wireless enabled which means you’ll be able to use the internet on the move in Wi-Fi hotspots such as cafe’s and on trains and at train stations. The weight of the Asus X58 is estimated to be around 1.5kg which is light for a laptop, however the battery life is only 2.5 hours so it is not ideal to use on the move.

The hard drive is 120GB, again, disappointing for a laptop of the Asus X58’s size. It’s adequate if you don’t want to store a lot of documents on it and will hold quite a lot of installed programmes. It isn’t clear if the hard drive can be updated to a bigger capacity but if that’s a worry to you, you can always use an external hard drive or flash drive.

The Asus X58 has 4 USB ports, ideal for connecting printers, flash drives, cameras and other external equipment. This mean you can carry data externally for backup but can still view it on the Asus X58

Another feature of the Asus X58 is the widescreen at 15.4”. This makes it ideal for watching movies (the Asus X58 also have a built in DVD player). Users of the Asus X58 have reported that movies can be watched in their original widescreen format due to the size of the screen of the Asus X58.

Overall, this laptop is a good machine, if very simple for a laptop. The price varies widely but it is one of the cheaper laptops. The laptop is basic and good if you just want something to surf the internet on and nothing else, but if you’re looking for a more permanent machine, for work and play then you’ll be better off going for something with more memory and hard drive to accommodate all your needs.
