Asus are primarily a budget manufacturer who were amonghst the first to specialise in web books and net books. Asus released some ground breaking machines in this area and were the first manufacturer I saw to release a netbook, which ran Linux and used a flash drive instead of a hard drive. They were very innovative machines and greatly influenced the market as it is today with regardes to web and net books. However, Asus also have a wide range of fully featured laptops available, such as the Asus X58 Laptop. Read more about Asus laptops here...

Asus Laptops Free With Mobile Phones

It is possible to get an Asus Laptop free of charge with certain mobile phone contracts. At time of writing the most popular model available is the Asus X58.

This machine is an all rounder designed primarily for home use. This, like most other laptops given away with mobile phones is really a budget or entry level device, however, the spec is pretty good and it should me more than adequate for the majority of home users. The X58 uses an Intel Dual Core processor and has a 250GB drive. It has high definition audio and a high definition 15.6 inch screen, a built in microphone and a built in 1.3 megapixel webcam.

Asus machines in general are pretty reliable but their construction is not of the best qualtiy, and the asthetics are not great either. They are functional machines designed for every day use "by the masses". They are not really designed to impress your friends, they are designed to get the job done at an affordable price.

In many respects ASUS are run along the same lines as the other great budget laptop manufacturer Acer, though Acer seem to push more for performance, whereas Asus build better "all rounders". Asus are also more dominant when it comes to web and netbooks and have some really nice machines in this sector.

In summery, I would buy an Asus myself, they are good value, but, I would also be looking at Toshiba and Fujitsu laptops as you may find one of similar spec / price from one of those two brands. I personally rate both Fujitsu and Toshiba highly in the budget sector and, assuming all other things were equal (price and performance) would choose one of those machines over and Asus based on brand reputation, and my personal (positive) experience of Toshiba and Fujitsu.
