NetBooks Are Very Small
Netbooks are designed to be used on the move. They are really geared towards people who want to be able to access email and other services whilst out and about. Netbooks are very popular with commuters for example, catch any commuter train and you will see people using them, often with a mobile broadband dongle.
What Netbooks Are Good For
As mentioned, they are great for use on a train or when out and about. You can easily carry them in a small bag and battery life is often quite long. They are great for email and web browsing.
What Netbooks Are Not Good At
Netbooks are not great if you have a lot of work to do. They keyboards are very small, and this will really slow you down if you have some serious word processing to do.
Netbooks are not powerful, they often have far less memory and slower processors than a laptop will.
Netbooks may not be suitable for the visually impaired as the screen size is very small.
Netbooks may not be suitable for storing large amounts of data as they tend to have small hard drives, or in some cases they use flash drives, having no hard disk at all.
Things To Watch Out For When Orderng A Netbook
There are two things to be really mindful of:
1) The Visible Screen Area
Some netbooks, which start of pretty small to being with have an even smaller screen size. The screen itself is surrounded by a wise border on the lid of the machine. This is a real disadvantage on a lot of machines. If possible, try and get one with a wider display. It is important to look at the display size with netbooks, as well as the overall dimensions.
2) The Type Of Storage Used
As mentioned, some netbooks do not have a hard drive, instead they boot from flash memory. The advantage of this is that some of them start up very quickly. In some cases you can begin working only a few seconds after turning it on. This is great in situations where you only have a couple of minutes to quickly check your mails. It is not so great if you have a lot of data to store, as these machines simply will not be able to do that. You could always use a USB flash disk to store files, but, none the less, you really need to consider whether you want to do away with that hard drive.
Personally I do not see a netbook as a substitute for a laptop. A netbook is really an intermediary device between a laptop and a PDA / Smart Phone, and I would suggest you consider your purchase along those lines.
