A WebBook (or ‘netbook’) is, in short, a mini laptop. They have all the features of normal laptops, just smaller. For example, a WebBook with come with a ‘qwerty’ keyboard and fingerpad for control of the mouse, just like a normal laptop. A WebBook is designed for working on the move and incorporates a wireless internet connection with basic software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. WebBooks are ideal for people who travel a long distance to work and want to make the most of their time.
The WebBook is smaller than the traditional laptop. The average display size of a WebBook is around 10 inches which makes it 38% smaller than a normal laptop. WebBooks are also much cheaper than laptops as they have much less features and functions.
The average memory size for a WebBook is around 1000MB (or 1GB). This enables simpler programmes such as Word and internet pages to be used quickly. A WebBook doesn’t have the memory power to play large games such as The Sims 3; it is purely a machine for working.
The hard drive space in a WebBook is quite large, as the purpose of the machine is for working on the go, it is important to have a lot of storage space. The average hard drive space ranges from between 100GB – 170GB. However if you’re used to storing your documents on an external flash drive then the average WebBook has at least two USB ports.
All WebBooks are Wi-Fi enabled (hence the name ‘WebBook’) which will enable you to use the internet on the go in Wi-Fi hotspots. These days most public places such as Cafe’s, Libraries and train stations are Wi-Fi hotspots and seeing as the WebBook is for working on the move, a lot of transport services like coaches and trains are now installing Wi-Fi into their services.
Another defining feature of the WebBook is the massive battery life, most have up to 9 hours of battery, beating normal laptops by a long shot. So if your journey into work each day takes two hours by train then you’ll be able to do two return journeys and use your Netbook the whole time without having to charge it.
All of the main computer producers now sell WebBooks. One of the best WebBooks available at the moment is the Dell Mini 10v. It has an average memory of 1GB but a larger hard drive (for a WebBook) at 160GB. The price tag is a lean £249, half the price of a regular Dell laptop.
The cheapest WebBook around is the ASUS Eee-701 which has a tiny 7 inch screen and an even tinier memory at 512MB. The hard drive is only 4GB but for £150, this WebBook isn’t bad at all.
If you’re looking for a bit more memory it might be worth paying a little extra (£200) for the Acer Inspire One which has all the same specs as the ASUS Eee-701 but has a bigger hard drive at 8GB.
